SERDANG, March 22 - Road safety is important for all drivers and passengers to reach their destination.
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences lecturer, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Professor Dr Kulanthayan KC Mani said one of the important measures for road safety is to reduce vehicle speed and use seat belts by drivers and passengers.
"Wearing a seat belt will reduce the possibility of death in a road accident by 40-50%. Therefore, passengers should make wearing a seat belt a practice for the sake of mutual well-being.
"Because the passengers in the back don't wear seat belts, the driver in front will also suffer serious injuries even if they wear them in the event of an accident. Therefore, drivers need to make sure that all passengers wear their car seat belts properly before starting the journey even if they want to go to a nearby destination," he said.
He also said that the rear seat belt helps reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident and it is an important protection when the vehicle is in fast movement.
He said this while delivering his lecture at the Community Health Laboratory, FPSK, today.
He explained that the practice of reducing the speed limit and wearing a seat belt is not only in the car but needs to be implemented when riding in public vehicles such as buses especially.
"It would be better if the bus driver himself made a warning announcement so that all his passengers use the seat belts that have been provided properly and properly.
"Safety is our shared responsibility, and by working together we can create a safer road environment for all, especially our loved ones," he said.
