Social media is the most common medium we use to interact with the outside world, apart from getting any information. Many people use social media as a primary source of information because they think it's faster to spread information.
However, without knowledge and awareness of cybersecurity, the risk of a personal data leak is very low. This is because there are still a lot of people who do not practice or use social media properly to avoid cyber attacks.
Previously we've been shocked by the news of the sale of Malaysian citizens' data in the cyber world. Media reports in 2022 that theft of personal information has reached 100 million datasets in the last five years.
This happens when hackers take a user's personal data and sell it on the dark network. The value for the sale of personal data is very high.
One of the techniques that hackers always use to steal personal data is phishing. Using this technique, users receive messages or e-mails that disguise themselves as publicly known organizations and ask them to share personal information such as bank credit card numbers, accounts or user passwords.
To enable this data collection process, they gained confidence by directing the victim to the specified web site. After the victim shares their personal information, criminals use the personal information received for malicious purposes.
Remove received information
So, as a user the steps can be taken to avoid this personal data leakage is to always make sure the received message or email comes from a valid organization, the received email is credible.
Users should also make sure that the received link has 'https' at the beginning as it is a way to identify whether it is secure or not. If the link you receive does not have a https prefix, it is best to ignore it.
However, there are many more methods that hackers can use to steal personal data.
All right, you must be smart when you're cyber and don't share personal data easily. Don't be fooled by promises and sweet offers that go beyond common sense. Avoid being the victim of the sale of personal data.
