IMPACT OF DECREASING OIL PRICES ON HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Article Search By : Mr. Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Bahagian Audit Dalam UPM

A drop in global oil prices could negatively impact higher education institutions (HEIs) in several ways. First, it could reduce national income, which in turn would reduce government allocations for higher education. Second, a reduction in national income could also lead to a reduction in scholarships and other financial assistance for students, making it more difficult for them to pursue their studies.

Here are some specific impacts:

Reduced educational allocations:

Countries that depend on oil revenues will experience a reduction in income if oil prices fall. This could lead to a reduction in allocations for HEIs, which in turn would affect the ability of HEIs to provide quality teaching facilities and programs.

Reduced scholarships and financial aid:

Scholarships and financial aid provided by governments or private bodies related to the oil industry could be reduced or withdrawn if oil prices fall. This would make it more difficult for students from low-income families to pursue their studies at HEIs.

Postponement or cancellation of development projects:

HEIs may be forced to postpone or cancel infrastructure development or research projects due to reduced funding due to the drop in oil prices.

Reduced employment opportunities:

The oil and gas industry is a major contributor to employment in countries that depend on oil revenues. The decline in oil prices could lead to a reduction in job opportunities in this industry, which in turn could impact the overall national economy and also the HEIs through a reduction in demand for graduates in related fields.

Psychological impact:

The decline in oil prices could cause economic uncertainty and anxiety among students and their families. This could have a negative psychological impact and affect their focus on their studies.

Overall, the decline in oil prices could pose serious financial challenges to HEIs and could affect the quality of education offered
