Meanwhile, the concept of good governance is associated with the principle of carrying out responsibility and trust transparently, responsibly and prudently within a framework of high integrity practices.   This terminology is often an important basis in describing a decision-making process and the delivery of results.

Today, the concept of good governance has become the axis and main pillar of every organization, whether private, corporate or public, to fulfill its responsibilities to stakeholders, customers and the people based on the goals and objectives of their respective organizations.

Good governance practices will enable every organization and its leadership to gain the unwavering support of its members and all key stakeholders, enabling it to weather all current challenges as well as address future changes and remain resilient.

In general, good governance practices can be divided into six main principles:

  1. Customer focus where organizations need to prioritize customer wants, needs and expectations. To that end, organizations that have good governance will always strive to continuously implement various initiatives and improvements to increase customer satisfaction.
  2. Emphasizing the importance of high moral and ethical values. The organization will ensure that every component of the organization's workforce from top management to the bottom possesses and practices high ethics and work culture centered on noble values for the sake of excellent service delivery.
  3. The organization is always transparent both in the decision-making process and in the aspect of sharing information with all stakeholders. This demonstrates the openness aspect of good governance practices.
  4. Cultivate integrity and be prepared to shoulder responsibility or accountability. Organizational leaders need to be prepared, willing and courageous in providing explanations to stakeholders for any actions in the implementation of a task. Ultimately, integrity and accountability are among the most important elements in good governance practices.
  5. Organizations need to ensure that service delivery is always centered around an effective and efficient work culture. To that end, organizations need to have wrought methods, procedures, regulations, and dynamic systems that allow actions to be carried out quickly, accurately, and efficiently without bureaucracy, while also being able to produce the best quality work using minimal resources.
  6. Lastly, the organization's ability to manage change, that is, how an organization can adapt to the changes that occur and ensure it remains relevant and competitive.

From these six principles, good governance can ensure that a culture of integrity deficits such as corruption, malpractice and abuse of power can be minimized, that minority views are considered and that the voices of those who do not stand out are heard in the decision-making process. In addition, the organization and its leaders are also responsive to current and future needs.

In a more global context, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) introduced by the United Nations (UN) outline three main principles of good governance, namely effectiveness, accountability and inclusiveness.

According to this principle, the effectiveness of governance is measured through the achievements that occur in an organization. Governance that can have an impact is governance that prioritizes the well-being of stakeholders. This governance will be able to improve the quality of work, produce good services and quality education.

The principle of accountability in governance emphasizes that the entire organization is responsible for the actions that have been taken. Each party in the organization needs to instill the value of trust or integrity in themselves so that this principle of accountability can be achieved successfully. The value of integrity in governance is also able to preserve the economy by reducing leakage.

The principle of inclusion aims to ensure that no party is marginalized due to differences in gender, status or position, where every individual has the right to provide opinions or share ideas to improve the performance and quality of an organization.

It should be emphasized that these characteristics of good governance have generally been universally accepted. However, their application in each organization and the seriousness of the organization's leaders in making them the pillars of administration are still loose and unsatisfactory. As a result, there has been a significant increase in statistics on cases of breach of trust, corruption and abuse of power at all levels of the organization in our country.

This phenomenon is very detrimental because good governance practices in every organization can develop the country and improve the lives of the people.

For example, good governance practices in corporate entities can increase profits and provide good returns to shareholders while also helping the country's economic growth. Meanwhile, public agencies can increase efficiency, reduce leakage and waste, thus improving the quality of services to the people.

Finally, the country's economy is growing rapidly, the development process is running smoothly, the service delivery system is more organized, and all of this will contribute towards the well-being of all Malaysian families.

In fact, good governance practices are a very ideal administrative concept and can provide various benefits to organizations and stakeholders. In principle, good governance will be the main pillar in driving the excellence of an organization. Public agencies, for example, are expected to continue to strengthen governance based on the SWIFT principles, namely speed, world class knowledge, inspiration, flexibility and technology based as outlined by the Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN), Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

In short, every organization in this country, whether public, private or corporate, as well as its leaders, must shoulder the responsibility of ensuring that good governance practices are placed as a key leadership agenda for the sake of the excellence of their respective organizations.
