In this era of increasingly sophisticated technology, the presence of the internet and social media has become a major part of our lives, including the lives of children. They grow up with access to unlimited information, online games, and interactions on social media. While the internet offers many learning and entertainment opportunities, it is also full of risks that can endanger the safety and mental development of children. This is where the concept of cyberparenting comes into play — the efforts of parents to protect and guide their children in using technology wisely and responsibly.

Cyberparenting refers to the approach taken by parents to supervise, guide, and protect their children when using the internet and digital devices. This includes monitoring their children's online activities, setting rules for internet use, teaching them about digital safety, and helping them understand the risks and responsibilities associated with the virtual world. The main goal of cyberparenting is to ensure that children can enjoy the benefits of technology without being exposed to threats such as inappropriate content, cyberbullying, online scams, and other security risks.

In an increasingly digital world, children are more exposed to various types of cyber risks. Cyberbullying, sexual exploitation, internet addiction, and access to inappropriate content are among the main threats that can negatively impact their emotional and psychological development. Studies show that children who are overexposed to the virtual world without parental supervision are more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and behavioral problems. In addition, the presence of pedophiles and online predators who target children through chat applications and online games is increasingly worrying. They often use techniques such as “grooming,” which is manipulating and persuading children to trust them before manipulating them into dangerous situations. Therefore, the role of parents in guiding and protecting their children in the virtual world is more important than ever.

To be an effective parent in this digital age, there are several strategies you can take to protect and guide your children in their use of the internet. First, open communication is essential. Talk openly with your children about what they are doing online. Ask them about the websites they visit, the games they play, and their online friends. Good communication helps build trust and makes children more comfortable sharing any problems they are facing. Second, set reasonable time limits for digital device use to prevent internet addiction and ensure they still make time for physical activity and real social interactions. Third, use parental control software to monitor your children's online activities, block inappropriate websites, and detect suspicious social media use.

Additionally, it is important to teach children digital safety. They need to know not to share personal information such as home address, phone number, or other personal information with strangers online. Next, parents need to raise awareness about cyberbullying and how to deal with it, including how to recognize the signs of cyberbullying and how to report it. Parental support and empathy are key in dealing with cyberbullying.

Although parents are increasingly aware of the importance of cyberparenting, there are several challenges that are often faced. One of the main challenges is the rapid pace of technological development, which sometimes makes parents lag behind in understanding the latest applications and platforms used by their children. Furthermore, children who are becoming more mature may try to find their own personal space and reject parental supervision, making efforts to control their activities on the internet more difficult. In addition, peer pressure can also influence children to violate the internet rules that have been set by parents. In these situations, ongoing communication and a non-punitive, but educational approach are more effective in guiding children in making wiser and responsible choices in the virtual world.

Cyberparenting is not the sole responsibility of parents. Schools and communities also have an important role to play in educating children about cyber safety. Educational programs involving digital safety need to be introduced at the school level to ensure that all children understand the risks involved and how to protect themselves. In addition, communities can conduct awareness campaigns and workshops for parents to equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to be effective cyberparents.

Cyberparenting is an increasingly important skill in this modern world where technology dominates a large part of our children’s lives. With the right approach, parents can protect their children from digital threats, guide them to use technology in a positive way, and ensure that they grow up in a safe environment. The digital world is not something to be ignored or feared, but with the right guidance, it can be a powerful tool for our children’s education and development. Through joint efforts between parents, schools, and communities, we can build a generation that is smarter, more responsible, and safer in cyberspace.
