5G TECHNOLOGY

WHAT is 5G technology?

5G is a fifth-generation wireless connection technology.

This technology is an extension of the previous generation from 1G to 4G.

However, 5G technology has significantly different capabilities than previous technologies.

In the days of 1G and 2G technologies, connections were made for the purpose of delivering voice services, followed by 3G for mobile data connections while 4G technology was developed for mobile internet.

5G technology has the potential to transform the function of mobile technology to society.

Does it have high speeds alone?

Not only is this 5G technology capable of delivering 10 to 100 times faster internet experience than 4G technology, it also comes with better quality connectivity.

According to a demonstration conducted by TM in Langkawi, the maximum speed achieved reached 1.5GB per second for data downloads.

This means you only need a few seconds to complete your favorite movie download in HD quality.

Previously, the latency was around 20 milliseconds, through 5G technology, the latency was very low at around 1 millisecond.

This delay allows remote control of the device to be more efficient and accurate.

In addition, the technology is able to connect one million devices across a square kilometer area compared to LTE technology that can only connect 1,000 devices in the same area.

The three main features of 5G

  1. High speed
  2. Low delay rate (1million)
  3. Able to connect more devices per 1 sq. Km

How important is a good internet connection?

The efficiency of mobile internet connectivity through 5G brings lower energy consumption rates on devices.

This means battery life is safer and devices can last longer.

In fact, the high internet capacity of 5G is also able to cope with the increasing internet connection rates on devices in line with the demand driven by the Internet of Thing (IoT).

Why do you need 5G? 4G is not yet complete in Malaysia ...

As of October 2019, the penetration rate of 4G networks in Malaysia stands at 82.2 percent.

Beginning October 2019, TM began the development of 5G infrastructure in Subang Jaya and was followed by 11 use cases in Langkawi Island under the 5G Development Project (5GDP).

As a way to keep Malaysia 'secure in the future', the adaptation of 5G technology will complement existing connectivity and accelerate the process of digital ecosystem development in Malaysia.

This is because the 5G technology tested in Langkawi is able to provide complete coverage in all areas (urban or rural) at a more cost effective way.

As an analogy, you are currently using the Apple iPhone 8.

Do we need to buy the iPhone X before upgrading to the iPhone 11?

The answer is not because it invests in buying the iPhone 11, it already meets the current technology needs (as offered on the iPhone X) but also complements the future of technology (as the iPhone 11 offers).

5G will transform existing technologies

To date, telecommunications mobile technology is not classified as a "general use technology" such as electrical, internet or internal combustion technology.

All of these common-use technologies have dramatically changed the way people live and the way they do business.

However, with the advent of fifth-generation (5G) technology, it has the potential to accelerate mobile communication through innovation while creating new industries that bring great benefits to the entire economy of the country.

This means 5G will be advancing mobile technology through technology improvements to connect people with other advanced devices.
